Dissertation Basics is day-long workshop designed to get doctoral students familiar with dissertation development components. This interactive workshop will include collaborative activities in which participants think through the dissertation process and introduce proposed topics, share research questions, reframe methodology narratives, and explain the relevance of the proposed research.
This workshop will help students understand the purpose of the dissertation and how to map out a strategy for dissertation writing. Participants will discuss developing a dissertation completion plan in any discipline and reviewing the expectations of academic scholarly writing. Other topics include how to identify and delimit the dissertation topic, how to undertake a disciplined approach to the review of literature and how to become familiar with the essential chapter development structure of the dissertation. The workshop program will share specific scholarly practices that successful doctoral students employed to complete their dissertations on time. Participants need to come prepared to engage in interactive activities to improve understanding of the dissertation process. Preworkshop reading will be required.
