Aileen Editha	PhD Candidate and Robert Sutherland Fellow in Law 2023-24	Aileen Editha (pronouns: she/her) is a PhD candidate and Robert Sutherland Fellow in Law at Queen's University (Katarokwi (Kingston), Ontario). She has explored and published on the intersections between property law and healthcare through a critical legal lens, including on the management of biological materials and transplant medicine.

Title: Lessons from Lacks and other stories: Prioritizing human rights and equality in research ethics and design

Objectives:

To raise awareness on various case studies of how research ethics and design have perpetuated biases and inequalities in healthcare and scientific research. While this talk will discuss Henrietta Lacks's story as a starting point, it will also explore the cases of Moore, the Havasupai tribe, the Nuu-chah-nulth, and other cases.
To explore the roles and limits of legislation and policy in ensuring fair and ethical management of biological materials and genetic information.
To invite and encourage attendees to think about and reflect on what individual and collective roles they may play to ensure respect for human rights and equality in the design, ethics, implementation, and publication of their research projects.
