The 2024 McNeil African American History Month Lecture at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be delivered by Dr. Keisha Blain (Brown Univ.) on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 7:00p.m. Prior to the inaugural MeNeil lecture in 2023, the annual African American History Month Lecture was organized each year by the UNC at Chapel Hill History Department with the support of other units across the campus.
In 2023, the lecture was endowed and named for Dr. Genna Rae McNeil (retired, UNC-CH History) who left a legacy of scholarship, influential teaching, respectful discourse, advocacy for equality and, above all, multitudes of students who went on to achieve great accomplishments.
Recent lecturers in the series include:
2023 (inaugural McNeil lecture): Vincent Brown, Charles Warren Professor of History, Professor of African and African-American Studies, and Director of the History Design Studio at Harvard University.
2022: Marcia Chatelain, Presidential Compact Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
2021: Charles E. "Charlie" Cobb Jr., journalist, professor, and former activist with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Along with several veterans of SNCC, Cobb established and operated the African-American bookstore Drum and Spear in Washington, D.C., from 1968 to 1974.
2020: Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Black feminist scholar, writer and editor, who is the Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women's Studies and English at Spelman College, in Atlanta, Georgia
2019: Ibram Xolani Kendi, author, professor, anti-racist activist, and historian of race and discriminatory policy in America. In July 2020, he founded the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University where he serves as director. Kendi was included in Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2020.
2018: Gerald Horne, historian who holds the John J. and Rebecca Moores Chair of History and African American Studies at the University of Houston.
