Incorporating wellness practices into the workplace can increase morale and retention, increase productivity, and reduce sick leave among other benefits.  This interactive one-hour workshop will provide two examples of such practices – coffee breaks and yoga – to illustrate how intentionally incorporating these habits into daily routine can strengthen the health and climate of the workplace.

Coffee breaks in the workplace serve as more than a quick fix for midday slumps, increased alertness, and productivity. The practice also produces a mentally healthy work environment by reducing stress and burnout and increases a sense of belongingness by building community with colleagues. Yoga, a form of mind-body fitness is classified by the National Institutes of Health as a form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine and has a positive effect on health in the workplace, particularly in reducing stress and an overall improvement in quality of life.

We will begin the session enjoying a cup of coffee with pastries* while sharing research indicating the many advantages of coffee consumption from a workplace wellness perspective. Next, we will discuss the benefits of incorporating mindfulness practice into the workday, specifically through yoga. We will move together in a gentle 10-minute chair yoga session* to demonstrate accessible, easy-to-implement tools you can use without the need for any special equipment, space, or clothing. We will then discuss how you can incorporate each of these techniques into your personal routine and motivate your colleagues to participate.

*Please indicate any dietary restrictions in your registration form. While the chair yoga session is meant to be accessible regardless of apparel, it is recommended to wear comfortable attire that would allow you to stretch and bend while seated.
