The Safe Zone program is a symbol of this Carolina’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. The purpose of Safe Zone is to educate people about how to create an intentionally inviting environments and interpersonal interactions with people who are LGBTQ+. It also creates a network of allies for individuals who may be marginalized on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. All UNC faculty, staff, and students are eligible to become Safe Zone trainees. Training takes place several times a semester. The Standard Safe Zone training is a four (4) hour program open to all UNC-Chapel Hill community members. The training will:
Introduce participants to LGBTQ terminology
Raise awareness of issues faced by LGBTQ individuals in health care settings
Present strategies for being an ally to LGBTQ persons
