Science Without Borders
with Dr. Ana Nogueira
The Global Perspective in Biomedicine (GPB) is coming back with our seminar series:
Science Without Borders - which features scientists with international backgrounds. This series hopes to complement the ongoing effort of university-wide discussion on diversity and inclusion in academia by encouraging cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural interactions between a diverse pool of scientists.
In the one-hour session, we invite the speaker to share their scientific journey and career path. It will also allow trainees from all backgrounds to share personal experiences and discuss strategies for navigating the increasingly competitive realms of science.
We are excited to start off the series for this year with
Dr. Ana Nogueira, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Pharmacology Department in the UNC School of Medicine. Dr. Nogueira is originally from Portugal. Her research focuses on developing molecular tools to be used in 3D high-resolution microscopy to monitor protein activity during platelet formation. Additionally, she is an Education Research Fellow in the Office of Graduate Education at UNC. As an Education Research Fellow, her research focuses on career awareness and professional development for the international trainee community. Dr. Nogueira is part of the International Committee at the National Postdoc Association. Before joining UNC for her postdoctoral work, Dr. Nogueira earned her Ph.D. degree in Microbiology from the University of Aberdeen in the UK in 2017, where she developed 3D cultures to study infectious diseases.
During this interactive workshop, Dr. Nogueira will discuss and share resources about the following topics:
- Academic (and non-academic) experiences as an international trainee
- How to tailor and understand the steps to develop short- and long-term career goals
- Current barriers as international trainees in the US and how to approach them
