Writing Resilience: Poetry from Pathology

According to the Academy of American Poets, erasure poetry is when "a poet takes an existing text and erases, blacks out, or otherwise obscures a large portion of the text, creating a wholly new work from what remains." Often a subversive act, erasure allows poets to reveal what is hidden in the text, to talk back to it, or to unearth liberation from once-oppressive narratives. Poets have done erasure on everything from grocery store ads to government reports to Shakespearean sonnets. The facilitator of this workshop, Anole Halper, a white queer & genderqueer poet and social worker, created a collection of poetry using erasure on documents about the intersection of queerness and madness. The centerpiece of this collection is an epic poem created from every entry on gender and sexuality in every edition of the DSM, or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the bible of diagnosis for mental health providers. After reading poems from their collection, discussing their own process of navigating their own identities, and sharing political erasure works by poets of color, Anole will offer participants an opportunity to create erasure poems of their own from news stories about LGBTQ oppression and/or resistance.
