Graduate students' mentors play important roles in their professional and career development from ensuring that students are aware of their options, to helping them to establish their professional networks, training them in accepted practices and norms within their disciplines, and encouraging them to explore diverse career paths. In this workshop, participates will explore strategies to help (1) Develop a strategy for guiding professional development using a written document?; (2) Initiate and sustain periodic conversations with mentees on professional goals and career development objectives and strategies; (3)Engage in open dialogue on balancing the competing demands, needs, and interests of mentors and mentees (e.g., research productivity, grant funding, creativity and independence, career preference decisions, non-research activities, personal development, work-family balance, etc.).
