Madness, Queerness, and the Places they Collide
This presentation by Anole Halper, MSW, MPH, will explore the history of how gender and sexuality have been constructed and pathologized as mental illness in the US over time. Together we will examine how the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) has discussed sexual and gender identities throughout history, focusing on how oppressive categories have shifted and morphed in unexpected ways. The DSM is the bible of mental health diagnosis for health care providers. The first edition was issued in 1952 and the most recent came out in 2013. Ostensibly based on the latest research, each edition of the DSM includes entries on sex, sexual orientation, and gender that perhaps reveal more about the society that created these categories than they ever could about us.
