It’s well established that active learning in a biology classroom promotes student outcomes. While there are a variety of different active learning approaches that faculty can employ in their teaching, students are usually not involved in the creation of these curricular interventions. Additionally, we often think that to develop students’ research-related competencies that we must involve them in wet lab or field research. Could involving students in assessment of novel curricular interventions, or more specifically biology education research, also promote their research-related competencies? In this talk, I will highlight three ways that I have involved UNC Department of Biology students in the development and/or assessment of novel curricula as part of either a course assignment or through formal biology education research experiences.
