The final phase of any doctoral program invariably brings questions about the academic and research job market - and whether and how to seek a postdoc position as an employment goal.
A recent international survey revealed ongoing anxieties about the postdoc experience but also optimism about a world that increasingly needs and depends on academic expertise.[1]
In this seminar sponsored by the Royster Society of Fellows and the Center for European Studies, postdoc researchers, faculty, and staff share information about opportunities in Europe and considerations for planning a postdoc career in Europe and future career impacts.
Given ongoing shifts in the job market, postdoc opportunities are always part of the discussion for new graduates. Social sciences and humanities PhDs from the U.S. are looking at postdoc positions both in the U.S. and abroad. A quick online search of European opportunities reveals openings at the European Research Council, the European University Institute, in addition to programs hosted by individual institutions. For example, UNC's strategic global partner, the University of Tübingen, hosts the Teach@Tübingen postdoctoral program. That program hosts postdocs from across multiple disciplines.
In the natural sciences, the European Union's well-developed research infrastructure and varied funding sources puts it on par with North America and Asia.[2] In 2018, scientists in the EU produced about 25% of the global share of peer-reviewed science and engineering papers - more than either China (21%) or the United States (17%). Science postdocs are more common in general than social sciences and humanities postdocs, but interest in such positions is on the rise everywhere.
