Developing and maintaining effective communication skills is essential for mentoring relationships. This interactive workshop introduces different communication styles, skills for active listening, and best practices for planning and providing feedback. Through discussion, activities, and case examples, participants will reflect upon the importance of effective communication to their mentoring philosophies and mentoring relationships with graduate student mentees.
The workshop is intended for faculty who mentor graduate students and is adapted from TEAM ADVANCE's Faculty Mentor Training and CIMER's Entering Mentoring. The ongoing series is a collaboration between The Graduate School, Center for Faculty Excellence, TEAM ADVANCE, and the Office of Graduate Education (School of Medicine).
Learning Objectives:
Understand different communication styles and their impact on communicating effectively with mentees.
Identify and understand best practices for planning and providing effective feedback to mentees.
