Wellness Circle - October 7, 2020

We are experiencing a great deal of distress collectively and especially our Black communities who are having to deal with the negative health impacts of racism in our society, and its influence within institutions that serve us.  We witness daily the building allostatic load of our students, staff and faculty. This is further compounded by the ongoing global COVID 19 pandemic. Graduate students are particularly vulnerable. It is important for you to be very kind to yourself at this time. Circumstances are definitely not under your control. Other people know this and understand that our current situation may hamper your progress.

In addition to being kind to yourself, please consider joining Shahnaz Khawaja, Assistant Director of Resilience and Recovery Strategies in the office of Student Wellness in a Virtual Wellness Circle. During these circles you will participate in and learn about ways to reduce and offset your allostatic load.

Shahnaz will talk about ways to turn off the body's fight/flight response and how to engage in activities that will allow us to remain calm and navigate the current situation from our most effective, creative and problem-solving brain. During these wellness circles, each week you will participate in different evidence based activities that will help you neutralize some of the stress you are carrying. Additionally you will have an opportunity to engage in some virtual social connection with peers.
