How is North Carolina collecting, compiling, and utilizing data related to violent deaths in our State?

The UNC Injury Prevention Research Center (IPRC) and the NC Injury and Violence Prevention Branch are hosting a workshop for students and faculty who are using or are interested in learning more about the NC Violent Death Reporting System (NC-VDRS).

What is NC-VDRS? NC-VDRS is part of a population-based, public health reporting system that captures information on violent deaths including homicides, suicides, unintentional firearm deaths, and deaths from police intervention. NC-VDRS data includes information on victims, suspects, weapons, and the circumstances surrounding the fatality. This data is assembled from law enforcement records, death certificates, and Medical Examiner's records, and maintained at the state-level.

Workshop Focus: Presenters will provide basic background information on NC-VDRS (what it is, how it can be used); share user-friendly data support tools; and showcase recent projects that have used NC-VDRS data. We will also brainstorm additional ways to utilize NC-VDRS data.
