A myriad of barriers affect the educational progress of young girls in rural Nepal, but a need exists for more evidence-based research. Obstacles include: early marriage, household labor, access to educational resources, and menstruation.  Menstruation is both rarely discussed and deeply stigmatized, limiting the quality of life for young women. Considered to be "impure," girls are often physically isolated and face multiple restrictions that in turn affect their school attendance.

In partnership with Professor Ganga Gautam, a well-known researcher at Tribhuvan University, we conducted focus groups with female students, teachers, and parents across rural Nepal. Additionally, one-on-one interviews with inspirational local female leaders were compiled into "role model" stories for dissemination. Preliminary data analyses show a number of shared barriers that vary in expression both geographically and ethnically.
