Stigma towards mental illness: Examining mental healthcare and policies within the context of criminal justice system and fear of gun violence.
Mental health and illness is becoming an increasingly salient issue due to the soaring rate of mental health concerns among college students, entanglement of mental health and criminal justice system, and recent events in the U.S. regarding gun violence. At the intersection of these three issues is the stigma towards mental illness. This panel will explore influence of the stigma in guiding policy-based and public conceptualization and treatment of mental illness.
