"Preprints, or manuscripts posted online before the completion of
journal-organized peer review, are experiencing a meteoric rise in the life
sciences. They offer scientists a way to communicate with one another
rapidly and transparently. Their popularity has stoked several controversies,
drawing attention to the question of whether non-peer reviewed material
should be cited and to the challenge of effectively filtering and verifying
claims in an era of information overload and "fake news."
The event will begin with a brief overview of the current developments
surrounding preprints, continue with an introduction to the question of
preprint citation and the effects of preprint servers on the publishing industry
as a whole, and conclude with an open discussion with the audience."
