WHAT IS DISSERTATION BOOT CAMP?

Boot camp is a week-long opportunity for students currently writing dissertations to set writing goals, practice disciplined writing habits, learn new strategies, and connect with other dissertation writers.

CONSIDER REGISTERING IF YOU ARE…

•Actively engaged in the writing phase of your dissertation.

•Ready to spend a total of 15 hours just writing (three hours each day for five days)--without reviewing your sources, reading, doing research, analyzing data, checking email, or using the internet.

•Able to commit to arriving at 9 a.m. and remaining until 1 p.m. on all five days.

  • First time Dissertation Writing Boot Camper

DO NOT REGISTER IF YOU ARE…

•Seeking a class or workshop about dissertations—what parts they have, what they should look like, step-by-step instructions for writing one, etc.

•Preparing to write a proposal or planning ahead for when you arrive at the dissertation stage of your program.

•Not yet actively writing text that you plan to include in your dissertation (i.e., still primarily researching, not writing).

•Looking for information on research methods or writing in your specific academic discipline.

•Wrapping up an almost-finished dissertation and simply in need of time and space to write.

•Not fully and reliably available on all of the specified dates. You must attend ALL sessions, arriving at 9 each day and remaining until 1pm.

  • Have been to Boot Camp before.

EACH DAY WILL INCLUDE…

•A writing strategy or activity led by a Writing Center staff member.

•Several blocks of uninterrupted writing time and a brief break in a large, classroom-like space with a variety of seating options and natural light.

•Debriefing and informal conversations with fellow graduate students over lunch.

• Vegetarian and non-vegetarian lunches will be provided.   If these options don’t suit your dietary needs, please plan to bring your own lunch.
