Postdoctoral researchers preparing for the transition to a faculty position often seek funding opportunities that can accelerate their path to independence and provide critical support during the early stages of their research careers. This webinar will introduce the Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI), a prestigious program offered by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) that supports researchers working at the intersection of biology and the physical, computational, or mathematical sciences.

The CASI award provides $500,000 over five years to help bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first years of a faculty appointment. Designed for scientists whose research integrates multiple disciplines, the program supports innovative approaches to addressing important biological and biomedical questions while helping recipients establish independent research programs.

In this one-hour session, Dr. Tammy Collins, Program Officer at the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, will provide an overview of the CASI program, including eligibility requirements, program goals, and characteristics of competitive applications. Drawing on her experience directing the program, she will discuss key considerations for prospective applicants, common strengths and weaknesses observed during review, and what reviewers look for in successful proposals. Dr. Collins will also share examples and reviewer perspectives to help participants better understand how to develop a compelling application and position themselves for success.

Tammy Collins, Ph.D. works with the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF), a nonprofit philanthropic organization whose mission is to nurture a diverse group of leaders in biomedical sciences to improve human health. At BWF, Dr. Collins serves as a Program Officer, where she directs the Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) program and the Innovations in Regulatory Science Awards (IRSA) program. Prior to joining BWF, she served as Director of the Office of Fellows' Career Development at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
