How to Use Data Visualization and Data Storytelling in Presentations
How many times have you been in a presentation where the presenter showed a table, and said, “I know you can’t read this, but…”
If you have to preface your slide by saying “I know you can’t read this…” it has too much information. Data is no different. Frequently presenters fill the slides full of data because they think that’s what the audience wants to see, but in reality, the audience wants to understand (or you want to persuade them), and slides full of data hinder comprehension and persuasion.
In this session, we’ll talk about how you can get to the core of your message, show data that highlights your core message, and provide additional resources for audience members if they have further questions. We’ll talk about how you can show data that’s easy for people to process since in a presentation you want people to quickly process your visuals and be able to focus their attention on what you’re saying.
We’ll cover which charts and graphs are easier to read, what data visualization experts in the field have to say, and discuss how you can apply these concepts to your next presentation.
Attendees will: •Discover which ways of presenting data are the easiest to process •Learn how to analyze the data they’re presenting and determine what is critical for the audience to process •Practice eliminating extraneous data that is adding slide junk instead of value •Discuss how infographics can be used effectively •Be given tips, tricks, and tools to use data visualization in their next presentation
