Relational Leadership Institute for UNC Biomedical Research Trainees - Wednesday, May 8 @ 9a-5p

Overview: This content introduces participants to the Relational Leadership framework. It emphasizes the importance of cultivating self-awareness, connection to others, and sense of purpose. It introduces psychological safety, positionality and power, developing a culture of feedback, and transforming conflict.

Context: This session consists of one 8-hour in-person session (including breaks and lunch); the day will include brief didactics, large group discussion, and small breakout group work. There will be capped at approx 50 participants who are graduate students affiliated with the Basic Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) and/or UNC School of Medicine’s Office of Graduate Education (OGE).
 

Session Objectives: ​​Participants will...

·       understand the purpose and schedule of the RLI Program.

·       understand what Relational Leadership is and why it is important in healthcare.

·       understand what a relational mindset is and why awareness is an important aspect of leadership.

·       understand the lenses that impact our positionality.

·       be able to articulate where power comes from, how we build it, and how we use it.

·       explore how various aspects of identity and power impact their teamwork.

·       understand what a culture of feedback is and why it is an important aspect of healthy teams

·       be able to use a feedback framework to give and receive effective feedback.

·       examine how conflict relates to their work and personal experiences.

·       understand what conflict is and how to diagnose a conflict.

·       understand how to choose an appropriate strategy to address conflict

·       practice the framework of a difficult dialogue
