This live three-part training gives participants a thorough overview of the history and efficacy of Motivational Interviewing in the treatment of substance use, health challenges, employment and psychiatric rehabilitation. Participants will learn MI Spirit, (Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, Evocation), and three core MI skills; the use of OARS (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries), the use of IRC (Interest, Readiness, Confidence) scaling and EPE (Elicit Provide Elicit). There will be significant practice opportunities to "try out" skills. In addition, participants will learn about rating their MI practice using simple MI rating instruments. This 13-hour Motivational Interviewing training will meet the NC DHHS CST Service definition requirement for MI training and is a helpful overview of Motivational Interviewing for ACT and other community mental health and substance use providers. We meet three times (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) with MI homework assigned between session.

This web-based training is led by Stacy L Smith, MEd, LCMHC, Member of MINT.  Ms. Smith is a senior trainer and consultant at the Institute for Best Practices, a former ACT team leader, and has spent 30+ years serving a variety of individuals in community mental health services.  https://www.institutebestpractices.org/

Training is appropriate for both staff new to Motivational Interviewing as well as seasoned MI practitioners. Participation meets requirements of NC DHHS CST Policy for new CST team members.  Certificates of attendance, documenting 13 web-based training hours, will be issued to paid attendees. 12 NBCC CEs are awarded to those who attend all three sessions fully on their own unique GTW link.

Training will occur from 9:30am - 2:00pm EST (with a 30 minute break given 11:30am - 12:00pm) on these days:

March 27th, 29th, 31st, 2023 (Monday/Wednesday/Friday)
