Through this workshop, participants will be introduced to the Marian Cheek Jackson Center’s oral history methodology in pushing against the exploitative relationship between interviewer and interviewee that has often characterized interactions between community members and academic researchers. Throughout the academic year, the Marian Cheek Jackson Center hosts workshops to teach UNC-Chapel Hill students about ethnographic oral history: listening exchanges deeply embedded in cultural practices, values and history that the listener is privileged to learn and bridge. By listening to act, oral historians aim to do justice by the storytellers by using their accounts in strategic advocacy for change. All of this work supports the Jackson Center’s core mission to honor, renew and build community in and beyond the neighborhoods of Black Chapel Hill/Carrboro.
