Avoiding Mealtime Stress in Pediatric Feeding Disorders: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Address Food Selectivity, Oral Aversion and Food Refusal

Feeding is complex and reasons for food refusal are multifactorial. Does parental anxiety and stress contribute to oral aversion, limited food selectivity and food refusal or does the food refusal itself create a stressed, anxious meal? How can clinicians improve outcomes for children and their caregivers at mealtimes?

As Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) is now more clearly defined, clinicians are better able to diagnose and treat complex patients, especially with the support of an interdisciplinary team. Through the use of case studies, review of literature and clinical expertise, the attendee will leave with practical approaches, clinical tools and a better understanding of how to foster positive feeding experiences for infants and children with PFDs.

Objectives:

1. Describe how poor appetite and food refusal affect a child with pediatric feeding disorders and identify three strategies to improve intake in clinical practice.

2. Understand the role of the PNP/RD/SLP-IBCLC on the interdisciplinary team, specific to tube weaning and oral feeding.

3. Differentiate between ARFID, picky eating and Pediatric Feeding Disorders.

4. Identify three factors (medical, nutritional or behavioral) that impact feeding therapy progress.

5. Differentiate between the roles of providers most often involved in the care of a child with autism and feeding challenges.

Exhibitors: Vendors will be present outside of the conference presentation area all day to display their products and resources, as well as network with conference attendees.
